Lefkas

A little about Lefkas

Lefkas was a great/large surprise to us - green and flowering in June
- we did not expect very much. Lefkas has connection to the mainland with an embankment and bridges.
The main town Lefkada is exciting to walk around in, but be attentive on to shops are closed in the siesta.

On the island itself there are good capabilities to visit small mountain villages, where you not meet so many tourists, and the roads is reasonable. IN automobile You can very easy reach the island around on a half day trip, so car rent for a couple of days is fine, otherwise You can rent a scooter/moped.
IN Nidri You can drive up to a very small village Vafkeri, there You will find few houses, a church and a tavern. The trip up there give You an incredible dashing view across Nidri and the many small islands.

To the island Meganissi there are several departures each day, and here You can take Your moped with. On Meganissi there are not many roads, but it is possible to find a beach for Yourself. There are a couple of small villages on Meganissi, so there is ability to get something to eat. Additionally there is ability to sail across to Ithaca (The island of Odysseus according to Homer) plus Cephalonia from Nidri.

From Lefkas there are many excursions possibilities on the mainland if you rent a car among: Ioannina, and see the old theatre in Dodoni, which is situated a little south of Ioannina.
East for Ioannina lies Perama, the 15.000m2 big cave with stalactite/stalagmite. And if you have read the book ELENI, is Lia which is situated close at the Albania frontier, perhaps on Your list of wishes.

Nidri city, is for holidays with many hotels, affairs and restaurants, bars etc., but anyway lovely.
Take a walk along the sea front, here is many taverns and cafes. On the main street in Nidri you also find many places for dinner.

BUT on the beaches there are unfortunately oil from the many boats, on the west coast we found a lovely beach without oil, Kathisma. It is a dashing beach, where the water inside are in blue and green colours - becomes however quickly deep.
The city beach in Nidri city, is children friendly - and with a lot of people.
Spies, Hotel Aphrodite, in Nidri, db.room with bath and balcony plus small refrigerator - neither pension - breakfast can be bought. The two rooms with sea view were taken. But we got room 4, which has balcony, and slant sea view. Aphrodite is situated very central between the main street and sea front, so there is ability to sit on Aphrodite`s snack bar and enjoy the lovely view.
The family, who owns the hotel, are smiling and helpful - a nice place to stay.

EKSTRA !!!

We had rented car/automobile for one week, and went to the Peloponessos.
From the mainland with ferryboat from Antirion to Rion at Patras (15 minutes).
Afterwards via Corinth, to Tripoli's, Sparta and down to the south east part of Peloponessos, where we sailed across to small island Elafonissos, and spend a couple of days.
Afterwards was the goal Pylos on the south west of Peloponessos. The trip went via the beautiful fishing town Githion, across the half insel Mani to Aeropoli and up along the beautiful coast road to Kalamata.
Then the main road to Pylos, where we were lodging in Hotel Karalis - 14.000 Drc. (about 325 DK kr.) incl. breakfast buffet * db.room with air-condition, TV and sea view.
Next morning up along the west coast to Pirgos (not far from Olympia), Patra and ferry to/towards mainland.
Visited the city Nafpaktos, up along west coast to Astakos, where we spend the night in a small pension (have forgotten the name- and it was nothing to recommend). Next day back to Lefkas.
We had driven about 2000 km through beautifully landscapes, it is difficult to say/tell where it is most beautiful, it change the entire time to new "pictures", and the season June is perfect - not much traffic - or tourists.
IN Politikens "The to Athens/Peloponessos and mainland" You can read what to see and find - or take a book from the library, there are so many things to see.
